Established by the United Nations in 1996, the International Day for Tolerance takes place on November 16th. "It is a time for people to learn about respecting and recognizing the rights and beliefs of others. It is also a time of reflection and debate on the negative effects of intoleranceLive discussions and debates take place across the world on this day, focusing on how various forms of injustice, oppression, racism and unfair discrimination have a negative impact on society. This is the day to create understanding on issues centered on tolerance, human rights and non-violence."

What is tolerance?

Macmillan Dictionary defines tolerance as:

“The attitude of someone who is willing to accept someone else's beliefs, way of life, etc. without criticizing them even if they disagree with them.”

Oxford Advanced American Dictionary defines tolerance as:

“The willingness to accept or tolerate someone or something, especially opinions or behavior that you may not agree with, or people who are not like you.”
